The Nia Initiative was not created in a boardroom. It was shaped through lived experience — through navigating systems that were never designed with us in mind, and through a quiet but persistent question: What would it look like if these systems were built differently?
Our Story
Many of us — our founders and the communities we work with — have moved through institutions that were meant to support, but often required people to explain themselves, translate their realities, and adapt to systems that were not designed with them in mind.
We have seen the gaps. We have felt the weight of them.
And we have witnessed the strength, brilliance, and leadership that exists within our communities — often overlooked, often underutilised.
The Nia Initiative was created from that place. Not from the assumption that communities need to be fixed, but from the belief that systems need to be reimagined.
Not from charity, but from architecture.
So we built one. A systems design organisation that works alongside institutions to redesign the structures shaping access, dignity, and opportunity — with the communities most affected at the centre of that work.

Most institutions seek community feedback after systems have already been designed. NIA begins from a different premise.

We work with communities, institutions, governments, and partners to transform lived experience into actionable insight that informs policy, redesigns pathways, and strengthens systems.
This is not consultation. It is co-design. The people most affected by systems are the most qualified architects of the solutions that affect their lives.

The NIA Initiative transforms how institutions engage African immigrant and refugee women and gender-diverse Africans by designing care-centered systems that expand access, strengthen economic dignity, and create pathways to leadership and influence.

WHY NOW
Systems that were built without communities in mind do not simply need improvement. They need redesign. The moment for that redesign is not coming — it is here. Institutions across every sector are being asked to reckon with who they serve, how they serve, and whose expertise they draw on. NIA exists to meet that moment with method, not just intention.
